The best Matter hub for your home depends less on specs than on which smart home platform you already use. If you haven’t settled on one yet, our Apple Home vs Google Home vs Alexa comparison walks through the choice. A Matter hub is the device that adds Matter devices to your home and runs them: Apple Home needs an Apple device for this, Alexa an Echo, Google Home a Google speaker or display, and SmartThings a SmartThings hub. You may already own one, since many smart speakers and streamers do the job (see what a smart home hub is and whether you need one).
The two questions that actually decide the choice are whether you have Thread devices (they need a Thread border router, which not every hub has) and whether you have older Zigbee or Z-Wave gear you want to keep. The seven options below cover every major platform, plus a hub that works with all of them. Prices are regular list prices, not temporary deals.

The 7 Best Matter Hubs
Aqara Hub M3 — Best Overall

The Aqara Hub M3 does every job a Matter hub can do, and it works with Apple Home, Alexa, Google Home and SmartThings. If you use more than one platform, or aren’t sure which one you’ll stay with, this is the one to get.
Best for: homes that mix platforms, or have Zigbee sensors they want to use everywhere.
What stands out in real use
It covers four roles at once. The M3 is a Matter controller, a Thread border router, a Zigbee hub and a Matter bridge, so the Aqara sensors and buttons you pair to it show up in Apple Home, Alexa, Google Home and SmartThings as regular Matter devices. It also has a 360° infrared blaster for older air conditioners and TVs, and it stores its automations on 8 GB of encrypted local storage, so they keep running when the internet is down. It has no microphone or camera.
Key specs
- Matter controller + Matter bridge + Thread border router
- Zigbee 3.0, Bluetooth 5.1, dual-band Wi-Fi
- Power over Ethernet or USB-C (adapter not included)
- Up to 127 Thread and Zigbee devices
- 360° IR blaster, 8 GB local storage
Pros
- Works with all four major platforms
- Brings Zigbee devices into Matter
- Power over Ethernet makes wired placement easy
- Local automations
Cons
- About $160, and no power adapter in the box
- You need the Aqara app for setup and advanced features
- No Z-Wave
Installation and compatibility notes
Set it up in the Aqara app first, then add it to your main platform with its Matter code. Plug it into Ethernet if you can, especially if it’s your only Thread border router. The power adapter isn’t included, so use any 5V, 2A USB-C adapter or a PoE switch.
Price: ~$160
Amazon Echo Dot Max — Best for Alexa

The Echo Dot Max is the cheapest way to get a full smart home hub for Alexa. It has a Zigbee hub, a Thread border router and Matter built in, inside a speaker that sounds much better than the regular Echo Dot.
Best for: homes based on Alexa that want one device for voice, music and the hub.
What stands out in real use
It replaces separate hubs. Zigbee bulbs and sensors, Matter-over-Thread locks and Matter-over-Wi-Fi plugs all pair directly to Alexa through the Echo Dot Max, with no brand bridges in between. Amazon says it has nearly three times the bass of the previous Echo Dot. It’s designed for Alexa+, Amazon’s newer assistant, which is free with Prime and $19.99 a month without it, but the smart home hub works either way.
Key specs
- Matter controller + Thread border router
- Built-in Zigbee hub
- Amazon AZ3 chip
- Wi-Fi, plug-in power
Pros
- Zigbee, Thread and Matter in one inexpensive device
- Good sound for its size
- Pairs Zigbee devices without a brand bridge
Cons
- Alexa only: its Zigbee devices can’t be shared with other platforms
- No screen for camera feeds or controls
- No Z-Wave
Installation and compatibility notes
Set it up in the Alexa app, then add Matter and Zigbee devices from the Devices tab. If you’d like a screen as well, the 2025 Echo Show 8 and Echo Show 11 have the same Zigbee, Thread and Matter hub built in, and our guide to the best smart displays compares every current Echo Show.
Price: ~$120
Apple HomePod mini — Best for Apple Home
The HomePod mini is the easiest way to give an Apple home a home hub and a Thread border router. Apple recommends a home hub for Matter accessories, and Thread accessories need one with a Thread radio.
Best for: Apple Home users who don’t already have a HomePod or a Thread-capable Apple TV.
What stands out in real use
It runs your home in the background. Once it’s set up, automations run from the HomePod mini instead of your iPhone, you can control devices away from home, and Thread locks, sensors and blinds connect through it. It also has a temperature and humidity sensor you can use in automations. Apple is expected to release a new HomePod mini in October 2026, and it’s expected to keep the Thread radio.
Key specs
- Apple Home hub + Matter controller
- Thread border router
- Temperature and humidity sensor
- Wi-Fi, USB-C power
Pros
- The simplest Apple Home hub
- Thread border router built in
- Also works as a Siri speaker for music and intercom
Cons
- Apple Home only
- No Zigbee or Z-Wave
- A new model is expected soon
Installation and compatibility notes
Set it up with an iPhone and the Home app, and it becomes your home hub automatically. If you already have a Matter device paired to another app, you can add it to Apple Home too: tap More options when you add the accessory. The Wi-Fi-only Apple TV 4K doesn’t have a Thread radio, so it can’t replace the HomePod mini for Thread devices.
Price: ~$129
Google Home Speaker — Best for Google Home
The Google Home Speaker is Google’s newest speaker, and it’s built as a Matter hub with a Thread border router inside. It came out in June 2026 for $99.99.
Best for: homes based on Google Home, especially if you only have a Nest Mini or Nest Audio today.
What stands out in real use
It adds Thread to a Google home. Google’s older Nest Mini and Nest Audio work as Matter hubs over Wi-Fi only, so they can’t run Thread devices. The Google Home Speaker can, and it runs Gemini for Home as its voice assistant. The other Google devices with a Thread border router are the Nest Hub (2nd gen), Nest Wifi Pro and Google TV Streamer.
Key specs
- Matter hub + Thread border router (Thread 1.3)
- Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth 5.4
- Gemini for Home
- Plug-in power
Pros
- Adds Thread to Google Home for about $99
- Google’s newest smart home hardware
- Runs Gemini for Home
Cons
- Google Home only
- No Zigbee or Z-Wave
- Thread 1.3, not the newer Thread 1.4
Installation and compatibility notes
Set it up in the Google Home app. Matter devices you add afterward can use it as their hub, and Thread devices will connect through it. If you’d rather have a screen, the Nest Hub (2nd gen) is also a Thread border router.
Price: ~$99
Aeotec Smart Home Hub 2 — Best for SmartThings

The Aeotec Smart Home Hub 2 is the current SmartThings hub. Samsung’s own SmartThings Station is no longer sold, so this is the SmartThings hub to buy now.
Best for: SmartThings homes with Zigbee and Matter devices.
What stands out in real use
It’s a full SmartThings hub. It runs Zigbee and Matter devices, works as a Thread border router, and Aeotec says it’s about twice as fast as its previous hub thanks to a faster processor and more memory. You can connect it over Ethernet or Wi-Fi, and your SmartThings devices can still be controlled with Alexa and Google Assistant through SmartThings.
Key specs
- SmartThings hub + Matter controller
- Thread border router
- Zigbee 3.0, Bluetooth
- Wi-Fi or Ethernet
Pros
- The official, current SmartThings hub
- Zigbee, Thread and Matter in one box
- Faster than the older Aeotec hub
Cons
- No Z-Wave (the older Aeotec Smart Home Hub still has it)
- No Apple Home support
- Needs a Samsung account and the SmartThings app
Installation and compatibility notes
Add it in the SmartThings app, then move your Zigbee and Matter devices over. If you have Z-Wave locks or sensors, the older Aeotec Smart Home Hub keeps Z-Wave, while the Hub 2 is the better fit for a Zigbee and Matter home.
Price: ~$130
Hubitat Elevation C-8 Pro — Best for Local Control

The Hubitat Elevation C-8 Pro runs everything inside your home, with no cloud and no required subscription. It’s a Matter controller with Zigbee and Z-Wave Long Range radios, which makes it the most complete option for older devices.
Best for: privacy-minded homes and anyone with Z-Wave devices.
What stands out in real use
Everything stays local. Automations run on the hub itself, so they keep working through internet outages, and nothing depends on a company’s servers. It works with Matter 1.5 devices, Zigbee 3.0 and Z-Wave 800 with Long Range, plus integrations for more than 100 brands. You can also share its Zigbee and Z-Wave devices with Apple Home, and it has integrations for Alexa and Google Home.
Key specs
- Matter 1.5 controller
- Z-Wave 800 with Long Range, Zigbee 3.0
- Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and Ethernet
- Fully local automations
Pros
- The only option here with Z-Wave
- Works without the internet
- No required subscription
Cons
- No Thread radio: Thread devices need another border router
- The most expensive option here
- Takes more learning than the big platforms
Installation and compatibility notes
Matter-over-Wi-Fi devices pair straight to the Hubitat. For Matter-over-Thread devices, you also need a Thread border router such as a HomePod mini or an Echo on the same network. Hubitat sells a limited Thread edition of the C-8 Pro on its own website, which swaps the Zigbee radio for Thread.
Price: ~$195
Aqara Hub M100 — Best Budget

The Aqara Hub M100 is a Matter controller, Thread border router and Zigbee hub in a USB stick, for about $30. It’s the cheapest way to add Thread to a home.
Best for: adding a Thread border router or a few Aqara sensors for as little as possible.
What stands out in real use
It plugs into any USB-A port, like a router or a USB power adapter. Like the M3, it can share its Zigbee and Thread devices with Apple Home, Alexa, Google Home, SmartThings and Home Assistant through Matter, and it runs local automations for Zigbee and Matter-over-Thread devices. Remote push notifications still need Aqara’s cloud.
Key specs
- Matter controller + Matter bridge + Thread border router
- Zigbee, Bluetooth 5.2
- 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi 6
- USB-A power (5V, 0.5A)
Pros
- About $30
- Works with all the major platforms
- Small enough to hide anywhere
Cons
- No IR blaster, Ethernet or local storage
- Wi-Fi only, on 2.4 GHz
- Reviewers report Matter in Apple Home still has bugs
Installation and compatibility notes
Set it up in the Aqara app, then add it to your platform with its Matter code. Place it near the center of your home, since its range sets how far your Thread and Zigbee devices can reach.
Price: ~$30
How to Choose a Matter Hub
Matter controller, Thread border router and Matter bridge
“Matter hub” usually means three different jobs. A Matter controller is the part that adds Matter devices to your platform and runs them, and it’s the technical name for what most companies call a hub. A Thread border router connects Thread’s low-power mesh network to your Wi-Fi, and you only need one if you have Matter-over-Thread devices. A Matter bridge makes non-Matter devices, like Zigbee sensors, show up on Matter platforms as if they were Matter devices, as the Connectivity Standards Alliance explains.
Many hubs do all three, but not all of them. The Philips Hue Bridge Pro, for example, is a Matter bridge for Hue lights only: it shares them with Matter platforms, but it isn’t a controller or a border router.
Start with the platform you already use
Each platform needs its own Matter controller: an Apple device for Apple Home, an Echo for Alexa, a Google device for Google Home. Matter devices can join more than one platform at once, so you can have a lock in Apple Home and Alexa at the same time, as long as each platform has its own controller. If you already own a recent smart speaker from your platform, you may not need to buy anything. Platforms also differ in which Matter device types they support. Our guide to the best Matter smart locks lists locks that work this way.
Check whether you need Thread
Matter-over-Wi-Fi devices, like most smart plugs, connect straight to your router and don’t need a border router. Thread devices, like many locks, sensors and blinds, do. Light switches come both ways, and our guide to the best Matter light switches marks which ones need a border router. Our Matter vs Thread guide explains how the two fit together. Since January 2026, new border routers are certified to Thread 1.4, which lets border routers from different brands share one network instead of creating separate ones, although support across platforms is still uneven. Also check your exact model: the Wi-Fi-only Apple TV 4K and Google’s Nest Mini and Nest Audio have no Thread radio.
Zigbee and Z-Wave devices you already own
Matter doesn’t replace your older devices (our Zigbee vs Z-Wave vs Matter guide explains the differences), but a hub with a Matter bridge can bring them along. Zigbee devices can move to the Aqara, Echo or Aeotec hubs above. Z-Wave devices need the Hubitat or the older Aeotec Smart Home Hub. If you’d rather build your own system, Home Assistant is another local option, with its own Green hub and Connect ZBT-2 radio for Zigbee and Thread.
Final Recommendations
For most homes, the Aqara Hub M3 is the best Matter hub: it does every hub job and works with Apple Home, Alexa, Google Home and SmartThings. If your home runs on one platform, the matching speaker is usually enough: the Echo Dot Max for Alexa, the HomePod mini for Apple Home, or the Google Home Speaker for Google Home.
SmartThings homes should get the Aeotec Smart Home Hub 2, and the Hubitat C-8 Pro is the best Matter hub if you want local control or have Z-Wave devices. If you just need a Thread border router, the Aqara Hub M100 does the job for about $30.
Do I need a hub for Matter?
Yes, in most cases. Each platform needs a Matter controller: an Apple home hub like the HomePod mini for Apple Home, an Echo for Alexa, or a Google Nest or Home speaker for Google Home. Many smart speakers and streamers already do this job, so you may already have one.
What is the difference between a Matter hub and a Thread border router?
A Matter hub (or Matter controller) adds Matter devices to your platform and runs them. A Thread border router connects Thread devices to your home network. You only need a Thread border router for Matter-over-Thread devices, and many hubs, like the HomePod mini and Echo Dot Max, are both.
What is a Matter bridge?
A Matter bridge makes non-Matter devices, such as Zigbee sensors or Hue lights, appear on Matter platforms like Apple Home, Alexa and Google Home. The Aqara Hub M3 and M100 are Matter bridges for Aqara’s Zigbee devices, and the Philips Hue Bridge Pro is one for Hue lights.
Can one Matter hub work with Apple Home, Alexa and Google Home?
Matter devices can join several platforms at once, but each platform needs its own controller. The Aqara Hub M3 and M100 can share their devices with all the major platforms, while the HomePod mini, Echo Dot Max and Google Home Speaker only work with their own.
Which Matter hub works with Z-Wave?
The Hubitat Elevation C-8 Pro has Z-Wave 800 with Long Range alongside Zigbee and Matter. The original Aeotec Smart Home Hub for SmartThings also has Z-Wave, but the newer Aeotec Smart Home Hub 2 drops it.
