Best Smart Thermostats for Mini Splits (2026 Guide)

A smart thermostat for mini split systems isn’t the same thing as the Nest or ecobee on a hallway wall. Most ductless mini splits take their commands from an infrared (IR) handheld remote, not from low-voltage thermostat wires, so a regular smart thermostat has nothing to connect to. What you want instead is a small Wi-Fi controller that sends the same IR signals as your remote, then adds an app, schedules, voice control and automations on top.

The good news: these controllers plug into an outlet, set up in minutes and cost a lot less than a wall thermostat. The catch is that you need one per indoor unit, each one needs a clear line of sight to its unit, and platform support varies more than you’d expect (only three of the five options here work with Apple Home). Prices below are regular list prices, not temporary deals. If you have a ducted heat pump with a regular wall thermostat instead, see our best thermostats for heat pumps.

If your home runs on Apple Home, the choice is between the Sensibo, the Mysa and the SwitchBot, since Cielo reaches Siri only through Shortcuts. For the SwitchBot’s Matter route, Apple recommends a home hub (a HomePod or Apple TV) for the best experience, although an iPhone on iOS 18 or later can add and control Matter accessories without one.

The 5 Best Smart Thermostats for Mini Splits

Sensibo Air Pro — Best Overall

Best Smart Thermostats for Mini Splits - Sensibo Air Pro

The Sensibo Air Pro is the one controller here that works natively with every major platform, including Apple HomeKit and SmartThings. It also measures air quality, which none of the others do.

Best for: anyone who wants one mini split controller that works with whatever smart home platform they use now or later.

What stands out in real use

Climate React. Instead of just running a schedule, you can tell the Sensibo to switch the AC on or change modes when the room crosses a temperature or humidity threshold, and the basic version of that is free. Geofencing and a 7-day schedule are free too. The Air Pro adds a sensor for volatile organic compounds (VOCs) with an estimated CO2 reading, so you can see when a closed-up bedroom needs fresh air, not just cooling. The optional Sensibo Plus subscription (about $2.99 a month) adds extras like scheduled Climate React, anti-mold and usage stats, but you don’t need it for everyday control.

Key specs

  • IR control for 10,000+ AC models (split, window, portable, cassette)
  • Temperature + humidity sensor, plus VOC and estimated CO2
  • Climate React, geofencing, 7-day scheduling
  • 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi
  • Powered by a micro-USB adapter

Pros

  • Apple HomeKit certified, and also works with Alexa, Google Home and SmartThings
  • Air-quality monitoring built in
  • Core automations are free
  • Sold on Amazon by Sensibo itself

Cons

  • No display, so all control is through the app, voice or automations
  • Some advanced features sit behind the optional subscription
  • No Matter support

Installation and compatibility notes

Place it where it can see the indoor unit, plug it in and pair it with the app, which identifies your remote’s signals. If you don’t care about air quality, the Sensibo Air (~$124) gives you the same HomeKit support and automations without the extra sensor. The older Sensibo Sky is cheaper still, but it doesn’t work with HomeKit.

Price: ~$149

Mysa for Mini-Splits — Best for Apple Home

Best Smart Thermostats for Mini Splits - Mysa for Mini-Splits

The Mysa looks the most like a real thermostat on the wall, and it was built for Apple Home, Alexa and Google from the start. Mysa says there’s no subscription, ever.

Best for: Apple homes that want a mini split thermostat that looks at home on the wall and just works in the Home app.

What stands out in real use

It feels like a thermostat rather than a gadget. There’s an LED display with adjustable brightness, and it covers Heat, Cool, Dry and Fan-only modes with up to five fan speeds, plus Auto and Sleep where your unit supports them. Because it measures temperature (to within 0.5°F) and humidity where you mount it, the unit runs to the temperature in the part of the room you actually use, not the reading up at the indoor unit. Every feature in the Mysa app is free.

Key specs

  • IR control for mini splits, window and portable ACs
  • Heat, Cool, Dry and Fan-only, up to 5 fan speeds
  • Temperature (±0.5°F) + humidity (±2%) sensors
  • LED display with adjustable brightness
  • 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi + Bluetooth for setup

Pros

  • Native Apple HomeKit, plus Alexa and Google Assistant
  • No subscription for any feature
  • The most thermostat-like design here

Cons

  • No Matter (Mysa’s Matter certification covers its central HVAC thermostat, not this model)
  • SmartThings support isn’t listed
  • On Amazon it’s currently sold only by resellers above list price, so we link to Mysa’s own store

Installation and compatibility notes

Mysa says it needs direct line of sight to the indoor unit and works with popular brands like Mitsubishi, Fujitsu, LG and Frigidaire. You plug it in, then point your original remote at it during setup so it can learn which codes your unit uses. One Mysa controls one indoor unit.

Price: ~$139

Cielo Breez Max — Best for Alexa and Google Homes

Best Smart Thermostats for Mini Splits - Cielo Breez Max

The Cielo Breez Max is the closest thing to a wall thermostat for a mini split if you don’t need Apple Home. It has touch buttons on the device, so anyone in the house can change the temperature without the app.

Best for: Alexa, Google Home or SmartThings households, and anyone who wants on-device controls.

What stands out in real use

Comfy Max. Cielo’s AI-based comfort mode keeps the room in the range you set and lets the AC rest when it doesn’t need to run, rather than blasting to a fixed setpoint and overshooting. Weekly schedules, presets and geofencing are included, and the Cielo Home app is free with no subscription. Its built-in temperature and humidity sensors can be calibrated in the app if the reading looks off.

Key specs

  • IR control for 20,000+ models of mini split, window and portable ACs
  • Touch display with on-device temperature buttons
  • Temperature + humidity sensors
  • Comfy Max, weekly scheduling, presets, geofencing
  • 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi

Pros

  • Works like a thermostat without opening the app
  • Alexa, Google Assistant, SmartThings and Home Assistant support
  • Free app, no subscription
  • Recognizes most brands automatically during setup

Cons

  • No Apple HomeKit (Siri Shortcuts only)
  • No Matter
  • One more device on the wall per indoor unit

Installation and compatibility notes

Cielo recommends placing it 6 to 12 feet from the indoor unit, in its line of sight. It works with any mini split, window or portable unit that has an IR remote, and Cielo’s support team can add codes if yours isn’t detected automatically.

Price: ~$114

SwitchBot Hub 3 — Best for Matter

Best Smart Thermostats for Mini Splits - SwitchBot Hub 3

The SwitchBot Hub 3 isn’t a dedicated mini split thermostat, and that’s what makes it interesting. It’s an IR hub with a screen and a physical dial, and it can share your mini split with Apple Home, Google Home, Alexa or SmartThings through Matter.

Best for: Matter homes, and rooms where you also want to control a TV, fan or other IR devices from the same box.

What stands out in real use

The dial. Turning it changes the AC temperature in 1° steps, which is quicker than finding your phone and friendlier for guests. Through SwitchBot’s Matter bridge, the mini split shows up as a thermostat in your platform of choice, and it uses the hub’s own temperature sensor for the current room reading. The trade-off is that Matter doesn’t support a dehumidify mode, so Dry mode stays in the SwitchBot app. You can also set SwitchBot scenes to start the AC when the room gets too warm.

Key specs

  • IR control for 100,000+ appliances, including ACs
  • 2.4-inch screen + rotary dial + 4 scene buttons
  • Temperature + humidity sensor (±0.2°C)
  • Matter bridge for up to 30 devices
  • 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi only

Pros

  • Reaches every Matter platform, including Apple Home
  • Physical dial for quick temperature changes
  • Also controls other IR devices and SwitchBot gadgets

Cons

  • Dry mode isn’t available through Matter
  • Works best in Apple Home with a HomePod or Apple TV as a home hub
  • More of a general hub than a focused thermostat

Installation and compatibility notes

Add your mini split in the SwitchBot app by choosing your AC brand, then add the Hub 3 to your Matter platform with the code on the back. SwitchBot recommends keeping your phone, any HomePod or Apple TV, and the Hub 3 on the same 2.4 GHz network during setup. As with every IR controller, it needs a clear view of the indoor unit.

Price: ~$100

Cielo Breez Eco — Best Budget

Best Smart Thermostats for Mini Splits - Cielo Breez Eco

The Cielo Breez Eco covers what most people actually use a mini split wifi controller for (app control, schedules, geofencing and voice) for well under $100.

Best for: adding smart control to a bedroom or office unit without spending much.

What stands out in real use

It has a small display and a local power button, so you can still switch the unit on or off if the Wi-Fi is down. The app gives you schedules, geofencing, zones and a usage history, and it even shows air filter status. What you give up compared with the Breez Max is touch control on the device and the more advanced Comfy Max mode.

Key specs

  • IR control for mini split, window and portable ACs
  • Display + local power button
  • Temperature + humidity sensors
  • Schedules, geofencing, zones
  • Table stand included, or wall mount

Pros

  • About $35 less than the Breez Max
  • Free app, no subscription
  • Sold on Amazon by Cielo itself

Cons

  • No Apple HomeKit (Siri Shortcuts only)
  • No touch controls on the device
  • Basic Comfy mode rather than Comfy Max

Installation and compatibility notes

Like the Max, it should sit 6 to 12 feet from the indoor unit with a clear line of sight. It detects your remote automatically during setup and works with Alexa, Google Home, SmartThings and IFTTT.

Price: ~$79

How to Choose a Mini Split Controller

Start with your platform

Platform support narrows the list faster than any feature. If you use Apple Home, you’re choosing between the Sensibo, the Mysa and the SwitchBot (for ducted systems, our HomeKit thermostat guide covers wall thermostats). If you’re on Alexa or Google Home, all five work, and Cielo’s display models become the best value. If you’ve committed to Matter, the SwitchBot Hub 3 is the only option here that speaks it.

Placement matters more than features

Every smart ac controller in this guide talks to your unit the same way your remote does, so it needs to see the indoor unit’s receiver. Cielo suggests 6 to 12 feet. Placement also decides what temperature the system aims for, because these controllers measure the room where they sit. Put it near where you actually sit or sleep, and keep it out of direct sun, which would make any smart thermostat for mini split control run the AC harder than it needs to.

One controller per indoor unit

A multi-zone system with three indoor heads needs three controllers. That changes the math: three Sensibo Air Pros cost around $450, while three Breez Ecos cost around $240. Sensibo sells multi-packs, and it’s fine to mix models, such as a better one in the living room and a budget one in a spare bedroom. Just keep each room on the same platform if you want one app for the whole house.

If your mini split has a wired wall controller

Some mini splits (ducted units in particular) use a wired wall controller instead of an IR remote, and an IR device can’t control those. The usual answer is the manufacturer’s own Wi-Fi adapter. Mitsubishi’s kumo cloud adapter, for example, connects its units to the Comfort by Mitsubishi Electric app with Alexa and Google support, though not HomeKit. Mitsubishi also makes a thermostat interface that lets a regular 24V smart thermostat control some of its indoor units, which is a job for your installer.

Final Recommendations

For most homes, the Sensibo Air Pro is the best smart thermostat for mini split control: it works with Apple Home, Alexa, Google Home and SmartThings, and it adds air-quality monitoring for about $149. If you live in Apple Home and want something that looks like a proper thermostat, the Mysa for Mini-Splits is the one to get, and it never asks for a subscription.

If you’re on Alexa or Google Home, the Cielo Breez Max gives you a touch display and smarter comfort control for about $114, and the Breez Eco covers the basics for about $79. If your home is built on Matter, the SwitchBot Hub 3 is the easiest way to bring a mini split into it.

Do smart thermostats work with mini splits?

A regular wall thermostat usually doesn’t, because most mini splits take commands from an infrared remote rather than thermostat wires. A smart thermostat for mini split systems is an IR controller that sends the same signals as your remote and adds Wi-Fi, schedules and voice control. Sensibo, Mysa, Cielo and SwitchBot all make one.

Can a Nest or ecobee control a mini split?

Not directly. Nest and ecobee use low-voltage thermostat wiring, and most ductless mini splits don’t have any. Some Mitsubishi units can take a 24V thermostat through a separate thermostat interface installed by an HVAC pro, but for most mini splits an IR controller is the simpler answer.

Do I need one smart controller for each indoor unit?

Yes. Each IR controller controls one indoor unit and needs a clear line of sight to it, so a three-zone system needs three controllers. Sensibo sells multi-packs, and you can mix models between rooms.

Which mini split controllers work with Apple HomeKit?

The Sensibo Air and Air Pro and the Mysa for Mini-Splits work with Apple HomeKit natively. The SwitchBot Hub 3 reaches Apple Home through Matter, where Apple recommends a HomePod or Apple TV as a home hub. Cielo controllers don’t support HomeKit and work with Siri only through Shortcuts.

Do mini split controllers need a subscription?

No. Mysa, Cielo and SwitchBot don’t charge for their apps, and Sensibo’s core features are free. Sensibo offers an optional Sensibo Plus plan for extras like scheduled Climate React and usage stats.
