It works fine for a week. Then you open the app and the thumbnail is greyed out. You restart the router, the camera comes back, and everything is normal until it happens again next Tuesday.
If you have typed “why is my camera offline” into your phone while standing in the driveway, you have probably already found the same list five times: weak Wi-Fi, low battery, old firmware, not enough bandwidth. That list is not wrong. It is just not a diagnosis, which is why following it tends to produce a camera that goes offline slightly less often instead of one that stays online.
Here is the thing that actually helps. “Offline” is a single word covering four unrelated failures, and the fixes for them have almost nothing in common. Ring, Arlo, Google and Blink all publish the exact numbers that tell you which one you have, and those numbers are sitting in the app you already have open. This guide walks through them in order.

Quick Fixes to Try First
If you want the short version before the explanation, work down this list in order. It is ordered by how often each one turns out to be the answer, not by how little effort it takes.
- Check the vendor’s status page. If every camera you own went offline at the same moment, the problem is not in your house. This takes ten seconds and it saves you from doing an hour of work on a healthy network.
- Power cycle the camera, not the router. Blink’s own instruction is five seconds with the batteries out or the cable unplugged, then wait 30 seconds before you retest.
- Check the battery, and check the temperature. If it is below freezing outside, skip ahead to step 4 before you touch anything else. This one catches people out every winter.
- Check the hub before the camera. If your setup has a Blink Sync Module, a eufy HomeBase or an Arlo base station, the camera cannot be online when its hub is not. Fix that first.
- Restart the router last, and pay attention to what happens next. If it fixes things for a few days and then fails again, that is not a fix. It is a clue, and step 3 explains what it points at.
Why Is My Camera Offline
Start with what the app is actually telling you, because it is less dramatic than it looks. Google’s definition for Nest cameras is the clearest: the device is not connected to the internet, so it cannot stream live video or save video to the cloud. That is all “offline” asserts. It does not mean the camera is broken, unplugged, or even switched off.
People also search for what does it mean when camera is offline, and the honest answer is that the app has not heard from the camera recently enough and has given up waiting. Everything else is inference.
The reason that matters is that four completely different problems produce that identical message:
- The camera cannot hold a link to your Wi-Fi. Signal strength, the wrong band, interference from neighboring networks.
- It holds the link fine but cannot push video out. Your upload bandwidth is full. The camera is connected and still useless.
- It never got a working identity on the network. Band steering moved it, the security mode changed, or it could not get an IP address.
- The camera is fine and something above it is not. Its hub, or the vendor’s cloud.

These four have no fix in common. Restarting the router does nothing for a frozen battery. Buying a mesh extender does nothing for a saturated upload. This is what causes security cameras to go offline again and again after you have supposedly fixed them: the generic checklist happened to solve a different problem than the one you have.

Why Does My Security Camera Keep Going Offline: Step by Step
Step 1: Read the signal number, not the bars
Bars are a marketing abstraction. The number underneath them is called RSSI, it is measured in dBm, and every major camera app will show it to you.
The first thing to know is that RSSI is negative, and closer to zero is better. A reading of -45 is strong. A reading of -85 is nearly nothing. Plenty of people read it the other way round and conclude their signal is excellent.
Ring publishes what each range actually means, and the bottom row is the one worth reading twice:

Ring is naming your exact symptom and attaching a number to it. Wyze draws its line at -75 dBm, below which it recommends adding another access point in that area. Blink keeps it simple in the app: two bars is a weak signal, one bar is a poor signal.
In the Ring app you will find it under the device, then Device Settings, then Signal Strength. Most other apps put it under a Device Health or Device Info screen.
Here is why this explains the intermittency. A camera sitting around -75 is not broken, it is marginal. It works when you go outside and test it, and it drops when the 2.4 GHz band gets busy in the evening or when it rains. A smart camera offline for ten minutes at a time, several times a week, is almost always a marginal signal rather than a failing one. That is also why moving it 6 feet sometimes fixes a problem that a new router did not.
Step 2: Do the upload math
This is the cause people almost never check, and it is the one that best explains a camera dropping while everything else in the house is fine.
Cameras are close to the only device in your home that uploads continuously. Everything else, streaming and browsing and gaming, is mostly download. Home internet in the US is sold on the download figure, and cable upload speeds are a fraction of it.
Ring publishes what each of its devices needs, per device:

Ring’s own instruction for households with more than one device is blunt: add these speeds together. Arlo says the same thing about its cameras, quoting 3 Mbps per camera for the Ultra series, 2 Mbps for Pro 3 and newer, 2 Mbps for Essential and 1 Mbps for everything else. Google publishes per-model figures for Nest cameras that run from around 0.7 Mbps when idle up to 2 Mbps while recording an event.
Now do the arithmetic. Four Ring cameras at 2K is 40 Mbps of upload by Ring’s own table. A common US cable plan supplies somewhere between 10 and 20 Mbps up, no matter how impressive the download number on the bill is. The cameras will take turns dropping, usually at the exact moment several of them see motion together.
To check it, run a speed test and read the upload number rather than the large one at the top. If your total camera demand is close to or above it, that is your answer.
There is also an early warning worth knowing. Arlo says its system automatically lowers video stream settings when it detects low bandwidth. So on Arlo, picture quality getting worse over time is the symptom that arrives before the dropouts do.
Step 3: Check whether your router is pushing the camera off
Sometimes the camera is doing everything right and the network is evicting it.
Band steering is the most common version. Nearly every camera in this category is 2.4 GHz only. All Blink cameras are, nearly all Wyze devices are, and Arlo requires a 2.4 GHz band for cameras that connect directly to Wi-Fi. Modern mesh systems advertise one network name for both bands and decide for themselves which one a device should use. When the router keeps trying to move a 2.4 GHz-only camera onto 5 GHz, or moves other devices around it, the camera can end up bounced off entirely. Look for a setting called Band Steering, Smart Connect or similar and turn it off, or split the bands into separate network names.
Fast roaming does something similar on mesh. A camera positioned midway between two nodes can hand off between them repeatedly, and each handoff is a brief disconnection.
Security mode is worth testing. If your router was recently switched to WPA3-only, older cameras can fail to reconnect. Setting the network to WPA2/WPA3 mixed mode, or putting the cameras on a WPA2 network of their own, will tell you quickly whether that is the cause.
Then there is the sheer number of devices. Linksys puts it plainly: a typical home router can address up to 253 devices, but consumer-grade routers handle about 20 to 50 comfortably. A 2026 smart home passes 30 devices without anyone noticing, and the cheapest radios in the house are usually the first to be dropped.
The quick diagnostic for all of these: does the camera tend to drop shortly after the router reboots or runs its overnight optimization? If so, you are looking at this category rather than at signal strength.
Step 4: Rule out power before you rule out Wi-Fi
If your camera runs on a battery, there is a cause here that no amount of network work will ever fix, and it is seasonal.
Ring states it directly: their devices operate normally between -4°F and 122°F, and “your device is designed to stop charging if the temperature is below freezing.” Arlo’s batteries behave the same way and will not charge below freezing even on AC power or on an Arlo solar panel, and the Arlo solar panel has its own minimum operating temperature of 32°F. Google lists operating temperature as a step in its own offline troubleshooting flow and flags 32°F as the point where battery performance suffers.
Put those together and a pattern falls out. A solar-charged camera in a cold climate runs at a net deficit for months, because it is spending charge every day and cannot take any back in. It works in November, struggles in January, and goes offline in February. Ring’s own recommendation is to bring the camera inside and charge it over USB rather than waiting for the sun to do it.
If your camera goes offline every winter and recovers every spring, stop troubleshooting your network. That is the whole explanation.
One more power detail, since it is specific and easy to get wrong: Blink asks for 1.5v lithium AA batteries, not alkaline. Alkalines sag under the current draw of a transmission burst, which can read as a connection problem rather than a battery one.
Step 5: Check the hub, not the camera
A lot of camera systems are not really Wi-Fi cameras at all. They depend on a hub, and troubleshooting the camera is wasted effort.
Blink treats this as two separate failures on purpose. “Sync Module is offline” and “Camera is offline” are different messages, and Blink’s instruction is to restore the module first, because the cameras cannot reach anything without it. eufyCam models go further: they do not join your Wi-Fi at all, they talk to the HomeBase over a low-power link, so when the app reports a camera offline, the thing to check is the HomeBase’s power and Ethernet. Arlo base stations and SmartHubs work the same way.
Blink also publishes two placement rules that catch people out. The first is counterintuitive: keep the Sync Module at least 10 feet away from your router, because sitting them next to each other causes interference. The second is that Blink’s range figures are measured through one exterior wall, which is the honest way to quote them. A standard Sync Module reaches about 100 feet on that basis, the XR about 250 feet, and the XR+ about 400 feet. Two exterior walls and a stone chimney is a different situation entirely.
There is one more Blink-specific cause worth knowing because it appears nowhere else. On the Sync Module XR, if the module keeps going offline after you reseat the microSD card, the card itself may be faulty. A failing storage card can take an entire camera group offline, and nothing about that symptom points at storage.
Step 6: Check firmware, in both directions
Firmware causes this problem coming and going, and vendors document both.
Firmware that is too old can fail to connect at all, especially on a camera that has been unplugged in a drawer for a year while the service moved on around it. If a camera will not come back after a long time offline, an update is often the fix rather than the cause.
The opposite happens too. Wyze publishes a dedicated support article for cameras that went offline immediately after a firmware update, which tells you how routine it is. If your camera dropped within a day of an update, check the vendor’s known issues page rather than assuming your network changed. In these cases the fix is usually a follow-up firmware release, with a power cycle to tide you over.
When It Isn’t Your Network
Every camera offline at once, on a network where everything else works, is the signature of a vendor cloud outage. Your hardware is fine and there is nothing to fix at home.
Wyze maintains a public service status and known issues page, and the other major brands publish equivalents. Check it before you do anything drastic, because the most common mistake at this point is a factory reset. A factory reset is the most expensive step available to you, it means setting the camera up from scratch, and it fixes the fewest causes on this list.
It is also worth knowing what your camera does while it is cut off, because the answer varies and it affects how urgently you need to care. Cameras with local storage keep recording through an outage: a Wyze cam with a microSD card, a eufy setup recording to its HomeBase, an Arlo recording to a hub. Cloud-only cameras, including standard Ring models, do not. In that case an outage is a genuine gap in coverage rather than a cosmetic problem in the app.
How to Stop It Coming Back
Once you know which of the four failures you had, these are the setup-level changes that stop it recurring. They take an evening and they hold.
Give the cameras their own 2.4 GHz network. Create a separate SSID for cameras and smart home gear, set it to WPA2, and turn off band steering and fast roaming for that network specifically. Your phones and laptops keep the fast band to themselves and nothing gets moved around behind your back.
Set a fixed channel instead of auto. Pick 1, 6 or 11 on 2.4 GHz. Auto-selection means your router can move the whole network onto a congested channel at three in the morning.
Reserve an IP address for each camera in the router’s DHCP settings. It costs nothing and it removes an entire class of intermittent failure where a camera cannot renew its address.
Fix placement rather than fighting it. If the camera is on the far side of an exterior wall from the access point, no setting will rescue it. Moving the access point is usually easier and more effective than moving the camera.
Match resolution to the upload you actually have. This is the least popular fix and often the correct one. Dropping a single camera from 2K to 1080p frees up 8 Mbps by Ring’s own figures, which is more headroom than most upgrades will buy you.
The Short Version
The useful move is not to try fixes faster, it is to find out which failure you have before changing anything. Signal, bandwidth, network identity and upstream hardware all produce the same word in the app and none of them respond to the same fix.
